Kingston, Jamaica: Music lovers will be treated to a special performance come Saturday, July 25, when both reggae royalty Damian ‘Jnr Gong' Marley and rap luminary Nas take the stage together for International Night II at Reggae Sumfest.

“It's not a Nas performance, and it's not a Damian Marley performance, it's going to be a Nas and Damian Marley combination, specially for Reggae Sumfest,” says Johnny Gourzong, Executive Director of Summerfest Productions.

Gourzong said that the pairing was the result of extensive thought by the Reggae Sumfest team as to how else to make this year's event special.

He emphasized that this is the first time that Nas will be performing in Jamaica, and added that it “will be an even more special performance since he will be performing with one of our brightest stars in Reggae music, a son of the great Robert Nesta Marley, and on the stage of Reggae Sumfest. I'm excited, they are working on a collaborative album, and the sounds of reggae with the beats of hip-hop should make for a great performance."

Another confirmed international act that will be rocking the Reggae Sumfest stage will come in the form of R&B sensation Jazmine Sullivan on Friday, July 24.

“We are arranging for other international performers, but we're not ready to release who we're considering. You'll just have to wait a little longer.” Gourzong teased.

The Festival, which starts with a beach party on Sunday July 19 and then has three nights of pulsating live performances from Thursday July 23 to Saturday July 25, will also feature, Bounty Killer, Mavado, Etana, Tarrus Riley, Busy Signal, Charley Blacks, I-Octane and a host of other local talents. When Saturday July 25 rolls around, Summerfest Productions promises an exciting close to the highly anticipated Reggae Sumfest. Kingston, Jamaica: R&B sensation Jazmine Sullivan will be rocking the Sumfest stage come Friday, July 24 when Summerfest Productions takes over Catherine Hall in Montego Bay for the 17th staging of the ‘Greatest Reggae Show on Earth', Reggae Sumfest.

Johnny Gourzong, Executive Director of Summerfest Productions, says that he was excited that the 20-something year old songstress will be able to bring her flavour to spice up the Festival's International Night I.

“We are really pleased that we've been able to confirm Jazmine for the show. We have been pouring over a list of possible international acts, and she was one of those artistes that really jumped out at us. She's been having a phenomenal year on the music scene internationally, and some of her songs are even reggae inspired,” said Gourzong.

Machel Montano HD will on June 13 perform at the legendary Radio City Music Hall, Manhattan, New York, adding yet another milestone achievement to his already impressive career.

Having presented sold-out concerts in the WaMu Theatre at Madison Square Garden for the past three years, the opportunity to headline Radio City was presented to Montano who jumped at the opportunity.

Montano's manager, Anthony Chow Lin On, told the Express yesterday that playing Radio City is a great achievement for any artiste and it's something wonderful to look back at the end of one's career run. Countless American, British and European acts have attempted to secure dates at the famed venue to no avail, so for a soca artiste out of the Caribbean to headline the stage is a major coup.

"After having done Madison Square Garden for the last three years, it was a no-brainer when the offer to do Radio City came," Chow Lin On said.

A line-up of guest acts will open for and join Montano on stage at the show, which is being advertised on the Radio City website at a cost of between US$64 and US$129 for the one-night-only event.

Even before Montano takes the Radio City stage, however, he will perform at the UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival, which opens on May 24 in Los Angeles.

Taking the stage on Memorial Day, May 25, Montano will perform alongside Mavado, Edley Shine formally of Born Jamericans, Tanto Metro and Devante, Peetah and Mojo Morgan of Morgan Heritage and other top reggae/dancehall acts.

The festival will also feature performances by Erykah Badu, Cherine Anderson and the Dirty Heads.

Chow Lin On said this annual event attracts thousands of patrons, the majority of which are non-Caribbean and includes yuppies as well as college students from UCLA and other campuses in the region.

"Machel performing at this event is another endorsement of where he is as far as his career is concerned as well as how Caribbean music is being accepted globally in general," Chow Lin On said.

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - April 11th, 2009: The Tourism Development Company (TDC) in conjunction with Pan Trinbago will be hosting the "Summit Sensations", a special edition of the popular Panyard Sensations series. The three night concerts are being staged with delegates and other persons to the Fifth Summit of the Americas in mind.

A spin off of the immensely popular Pan Yard Sensations which showcases the best of pan in a concert format alongside other elements of culture, "Summit Sensations" will be held at three different venues in Port of Spain.

The first event is on Friday 17 April at the bp Renegades Pan Theatre, Charlotte Street, Port of Spain. Featured steelbands are Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille, TCL Group Skiffle Bunch and host band bp Renegades. Showtime is 8:00pm

The action shifts to the Trinidad All Stars Panyard, Duke Street, Port of Spain, on Saturday 18 April where Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars, WITCO Desperadoes and CLICO Sforzata, Panorama Medium Band 2009 winner, will share the spotlight. Showtime 8:00pm

On the final night, Sunday 19 April, Panorama Champion Large Band category Silver Stars, Caribbean Airlines Invaders, Couva Joylanders, will perform at the Queen's Park Oval, Tragerate Road. Showtime is 6:00pm

There is an admission fee of TT$100. or US$20. to each concert.

"Summit Sensations" is being staged to coincide with this country's hosting 33 world leaders and their delegation at the Fifth Summit of the Americas in April 2009.

The showcase gives visitors, international media personnel and members of the public a golden opportunity to enjoy the sounds of the national instrument and view selected aspects of Trinidad & Tobago culture in a post-carnival scenario.

The Fifth Summit of the Americas announce opening of "Summit Village" at Port-of-Spain Waterfront

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - April 11th, 2009: For one week, the Waterfront on Wrightson Road in Port of Spain will come alive with a potpourri of activities, which will form part of the Summit Village for the Fifth Summit of the Americas 2009.

The National Secretariat for the Fifth Summit of the Americas has organised the Summit Village as both an indoor and outdoor space for visiting delegates and media to learn about Trinidad and Tobago, as well as purchase local art.

However, the national community is not left out of the activities, which will take place from Monday 13th April to Sunday 19th April, 2009.

The Indoor Pavilion will be located on the ground floor of the International Financial Centre, Tower C, 1A Wrightson Road, Port of Spain, while the Outdoor Pavilion will be located on the quay side area, just west of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, stretching to the Femmes du Chalet.

The Indoor Pavilion will be a general services area which would cater to some of the logistical requirements of the media and delegates attending the Fifth Summit of the Americas from April 17-19.

The Outdoor Pavilion will be designed to encourage visitors to lounge, shop and be entertained by some of the country’s foremost entertainers like Shurwayne Winchester; Relator; Mungal Patasar; The Codrington Family; H2O Phlo; David Bereaux and Friends; Sitara Baal; Tobago Reel; The Shiv Shakti Dancers and David Rudder.

The public is invited to enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of the Summit Village on Monday April 13th and Tuesday April 14th, 2009 from 12 noon to 6:00 p.m. and on Wednesday April 15th, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Summit Village will however be closed to the public from Thursday April 16th to Sunday April 19th. At that time only accredited personnel attending the Fifth Summit of the Americas can attend. Thursday, April 9 – Kingston, Jamaica: Coming off last Friday’s ‘Moulin Rouge’ fete at the Mas Camp, Bacchanal Jamaica is showing no signs of slowing down before the big road march on Sunday April 19.

Bacchanal Jamaica along with Digicel ups the tempo of the carnival vibe starting this Saturday, April 11th with Beach J’ouvert at James Bond Beach and continuing the fun next week Wednesday with Soca @ De Sandbar at Lime Quay, and Bacchanal J’ouvert on April 17th at the Mas Camp.

` Rasta Got Soul,` a roots reggae album, is set to drop on Banton`s Gargamel Music label On April 21.

It was reportedly recorded over a seven year period and marks the 43rd anniversary of the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie's historic visit to Jamaica in 1966.

`Rasta Got Soul,` is grounded in the tenets of roots and culture and is a far cry from the `Boom Bye Bye` song that gay activists have frequently chastised the musician for over the years.

New York’s premiere DJ, Jabba from Hot 97FM was the first radio DJ to premiere the song to over 9 million listeners who called in to request several ‘pull-ups’ of the song. Since then, “Sunglasses” has been the number one tune download on L3 Music Distribution’s download service which services over 1,000 radio DJ’s worldwide. “I’m overwhelmed by the response to the song”, says Bruk Up, currently in Atlanta. “I just Love to entertain, so singing is another extension of that”.

Later this month, Bruk Up will be shooting the Video for “Sunglasses”. Always surprising us with cameo appearances in celebrity videos, we’ll have to wait and see which celebrity artists will make a cameo appearance in Bruk Up’s video! Soca Monarch Fay-Ann on winning Road March: I am really elated over the three victories and very thankful to God for how everything turned out.

Reigning National Road March champion Fay-Ann Lyons Alvarez was yesterday trying to get some much-needed rest, in the midst of fielding phone calls from people calling to congratulate her on winning the 2009 Road March title.

Lyons was by mid-morning yesterday declared the 2009 Road March winner with "Meet SuperBlue", the song with which she also copped the International Power Soca Monarch title on Carnival Friday. Lyons won the International Groovy Soca Monarch title as well.

Lyons told the Express she felt good about retaining the Road March title, and knew just what to expect throughout the day and coming week, but she was more excited over the fact that she came away with three titles this time around.

"I went through this last year, so I know what to expect today as far as the Road March is concerned. I am really elated over the three victories, and very thankful to God for how everything turned out. We all worked very hard this year, my husband (Bunji Garlin), Ian (Ian Pantin, Asylum manager), the band and everyone who was involved. Now, it's time to rest and get ready for the baby. I've actually been at rest since after the Soca Monarch," Lyons said.

Speaking with the Express last night, Bunji said he was proud of his wife, whom he looks upon as a young woman.

He said when he looks at other women her age and younger, and sees the challenges they have to face today, it is good they could look at her as an inspiration to achieve what they set out to, in spite of what people would say and personal challenges being faced.

Right now, Bunji said he wants to rest and ensure that Lyons has a safe delivery.

When Lyons won her first Road March title in 2003 with "Display", she said she was aiming to equal the number of titles held by her father, SuperBlue, who has won on eight occasions. Lyons, whose Road March count now stands at three (last year she won with "Get On"), said her father told her after her performance at the Soca Monarch competition that she has to aim at winning the Road March title 11 times, which means he wants her to surpass the record of ten set by Kitchener.

On Tuesday night, a rumour that Lyons had given birth to a girl began to circulate, and although she and Bunji told the media the baby had not yet been born, the rumours persisted. Lyons said she is amazed by this because up to yesterday afternoon people were still calling and congratulating her on the birth of her child, which is not due until next month.

"This is marvellous. The rumour went out by who, we don't know, and people instantly believed it. We told people that called it was not true, and they still believed the rumour. The rumour took precedence over what we were saying. This is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Even though we are saying the baby has not come as yet, people insist it has. It just goes to show that you can't believe everything you hear. Ian and I had a good laugh over it," Lyons said.

LIL JON CREATES 'DIRTY SOCA'

NEW YORK, NY (RHONA FOX, INC.) - Lil Jon is known to the hip-hop world as the "King of Crunk," a superstar rapper and producer. What they probably don't know is he started out as a dancehall selecta or deejay, as a member of the Four Seasons Sound System during the '90s, in his hometown of Atlanta. Now the entertainer, formally known as Jonathan Smith, is coming full circle, flirting with his love of Caribbean music by injecting his unique crunk flavor into this year's Carnival festivities in Trinidad.

Jon will not only be performing, but he has actually produced a beat for a collaboration between him, Latin hip-hop star Pitbull, and soca artist Machel Montano, called "Floor On Fire." The success of the production has evolved the track into a full-fledged riddim, with numerous Caribbean stars voicing on it, including Kevin Lyttle and Mr. Vegas. As a result, a new breed of soca is being introduced and will see its debut on soca's most prolific stage - Trinidad Carnival.

This is not the first major stage on which Jon has displayed his flair for island beats. He first appeared alongside Pitbull and Machel Montano at soca's other big festival, Crop Over in Barbados, last August. He was also in Trinidad recently to kick off Carnival, performing with Montano at the annual WASA Fete on January 31.

"At Crop Over, we decided we would do another collaboration - but something fresh and from scratch. I went home, did the beat, sent it to Pitbull and Machel, and this time we also got into the studio together and the rest is history. Now with 'Floor On Fire,' dirty soca is born."

Jon's vision is to not merely spread the new flavas from fete to fete, but his goals are to bring international and mainstream attention to Caribbean music, in all its forms. His blueprint for this dynamic undertaking plots collaborations with soca, dancehall, reggae and Latin entertainers, and sees him trekking throughout the islands and also working the international circuit that celebrates Caribbean music.

As for his love for Caribbean music, Jon is drawn to the energy found within. "I like how it takes the party to another level," says Jon, of his first taste as a deejay. "The energy of the music would have all the girls partying and getting crazy - it's always a fun experience."

Longtime industry playmaker DJ Buddha, music consultant to Jon and A&R to Pitbull, introduced the trio and is responsible for the fusion of sounds. "My interest falls in bringing good music to the masses and being able to expose our culture and brand to the world," reveals DJ Buddha. " I want people to understand that a lot of the music they know and love originated in the Caribbean, such as reggae, soca, calypso, hip-hop, reggaeton, merengue, salsa, and are fused from these small countries and rich cultures."

A virgin to TNT Carnival, Jon is excited to be included in this year's history. "I hear it's the biggest, best and wildest carnival in the world." He is also using the trip as an opportunity to shoot the video for the hit single, "Floor On Fire." "I want to capture the true essence of the culture, and therefore shoot the video at AC7, and on Carnival Monday and Tuesday," states the star. Fans pick Exodus, Silver Stars in semis

Pan Trinbago set a new record at Sunday’s staging of the national Panorama semi-finals at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain, when judging in the competition wrapped up before the stroke of midnight. The presentation of 30 conventional steel orchestras in the categories: small, medium and large, started just after 1 pm and lasted almost 11 hours—ending at 11.58—beating patron expectations.

Judging from the mixed weather patterns and the sometimes slow pace at which a few of the bands took the stage, pan lovers firmly believed they would not have left the Savannah before 12.45 am. However, the pace quickened.

When San Juan-based Pamberi closed the music fare with its rendition of Shadow’s Ecstasy arranged by Cheo Cato, it was 11.58 pm and many patrons were left wondering “what to do next.” In the absence of published results from Pan Trinbago—as they await judging in similar categories in Tobago—the court of public opinion was called to order to preside over and give its verdict on refined performances in the high anticipated large conventional category.

Naturally, they zoomed in on the large conventional bands, which in their view represented the keenest competition on the day’s playbill. And, in their ruling defending champion Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove and arch music rival Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars were not atop the list, but are finalists.

Premium places went to Newtown-based Silver Stars Steel Orchestra and four-time national Panorama champion Sagicor Exodus for their renditions. Silver Stars excited music lovers with its colour rendition of First In Line composed and arranged by Edwin Pouchet, while Sagicor Exodus communicated the mood of T&T with its treatment of Festival Time.

When Silver Stars took the stage at 9.09 pm the audience rated the band as “the best thing to cross the stage,” in this category. Almost two-and-a-half hours later Exodus delivered its musical wares to the delight of the savannah and received an equal rating. Six-time Panorama “champs” Trinidad All Stars opened the competition for conventional large bands playing Pan Rivalry arranged by Leon “Smooth” Edwards, but Caribbean Airlines Invaders brought its own winning elements too.

Both were given a warm savannah welcome when the appeared on stage with PCS Nitrogen Starlift and Birdsong respectively. Starlift played First In Line and Birdsong’s rendition was Just Right. Being out of the championship spotlight for some time it was all about music redemption for Witco Desperadoes. When nine-time Panorama champion bp Renegades took the stage it was all about tributes and the affection went to legendary arranger/composer Dr Jit Samaroo.

All eyes were on reigning Panorama champion Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove as the band seeks to attain a hattrick in the competition.
Playing Magic Drums composed and arranged by Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, the band saw its media attention spiked when Machel Montano joined Boogsie at the front of the band during the performance.

2009 International Soca Monarch Semi-Finalists announced !

Thursday January 22nd, 2009 – Sixty acts from all over the Caribbean will vie for a place in the 2009 International Soca Monarch Finals on Feb 8th. Included this year are artists from St Vincent, Antigua, Barbados, Grenada; but again the greater part of the bunch are representatives from Trinidad and Tobago.

Some of the favourites expected to move on to the final in the Groovy competition are Edwin Yearwood, Peter Ram, Shal Marshall, Patch, Zan, Zoelah and Tizzy. In the power category, Berbice, Blaxx, Olatunji Yearwood and Shurwayne Winchester are likely to get the nod. Competing in both categories (Power & Groovy) Faye-Ann Lyons is expected to yet again be a crowd mover, along with Iwer ‘De Boss’ George, Nadia Batson and HD’s Patrice Roberts.

2008 winners Shurwayne Winchester (Groovy) and Bunji Garlin (Power) receive automatic berths in the final of course; and will be joined by international artists, Ricky T (2008 St. Lucia Soca Monarch) and Skinny Fabulous (2008 St Vincent Soca Monarch).

The Semi-Final competition takes place at the Arima Velodrome on Sunday 8th February at 4pm. Fantasic Friday (Soca Monarch Final) takes place on Friday February 20th at a venue still to be announced.

Calypso Icon Passes On

CaribWorldNews, PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Thurs. Jan. 15, 2009: Renown Trinidad and Tobago Calypsonian, Kelvin ‘Mighty Duke’ Pope, has died.

Pope was 76. Duke, according to Trinidad media reports, was diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a grave bone marrow disorder that disrupts the body’s normal production of blood cells. He had been battling the disease for four years.

`The Mighty Duke,` was born in 1932 in Point Fortin, Trinidad, a community known for its extraordinary number of entertainers. He grew up in a home where calypso was a staple and he soon after joined the calypso fraternity as a prolific composer. The first song he wrote was in the 1950s.

And from there it was no looking back as `The Mighty Duke,` went on to accomplish a feat that many say may never be repeated in calypso history. He earned the moniker `a Pope, a Duke and a King,` when he set a record as the quadruple winner of the crown at four consecutive Dimanche Gras shows from 1968 - 1971. He won in 1968 with `What is Calypso` and `Social Bacchanal;` in 1969 with `Black is Beautiful` and `One Foot Visina;` in 1970 with `Brotherhood of Man` and `See Through` and in 1971 with `Mathematical Formula` and `Melvie and Yvonne.`

Duke also won the Road March Title with `Thunder` in 1987. He was regarded by many as being on par with Calypso stalwarts like Aldwin `Kitchener` Roberts, who also died during a Carnival season. Among the Mighty Duke’s early contemporaries were Maestro, Stalin, Power, Ras Shorty I and Composer.

The career of the T&T national calypso icon spanned over four decades during which he made an invaluable contribution to Trinidad and Tobago’s calypso heritage. In 1970, the Mighty Duke was honored with the Humming Bird gold medal for his musical accomplishments.

Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, Marlene McDonald, on Wednesday extended `deepest condolences` to Pope`s family, adding, `The national community will miss not only his gentlemanly demeanor but also his unique sartorial elegance.`

New Campaign Urges Myspace.Com To Create A Soca Music Category

CaribWorldNews, TORONTO, Canada, Fri. Jan. 9, 2009: A new advocacy campaign is urging social network, MySpace, to officially list Soca as a musical genre on the portal.

The initiative titled, Bring Soca to MySpace, is lobbying to make it easy for fans to browse Soca music online and interact with their favorite personalities.

The campaign is being organized by Karen L. Richardson, a Canadian-based radio personality and founder of Mustard Seed Media.

`Every other style of Western music is up there,` says Richardson, who is known as `Nurse Karen.` `We are simply asking MySpace to give soca artists the respect they deserve. Artists already use the site, but they have to describe their sounds as Reggae, Tropical, Fusion or Zouk. There is no category that represents them. As a result, Soca artists never have the chance rise to the top of MySpace music charts. Soca is way bigger than that, so the time is now for a change.`

Richardson says the `Bring Soca to MySpace` campaign has four main aims. They include the creation of a Soca category in MySpace Music and the featuring of Soca artist profiles on the site splash page.

At present, MySpace considers the Caribbean to fit under the umbrella of Latin America. Therefore Caribbean users often login to into a Spanish-language interface featuring the latest in Reggaeton and Latin Pop.

Richardson believes that the end result of the above recommendations will create a win-win situation for the Soca music industry, fans and MySpace alike.

Trinidadian World Champion boxer dies in tragic car crash

Monday January 5th, 2009, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad - Undefeated Trinidad and Tobago boxing champion Giselle Salandy, died when her vehicle veered off the Beetham Highway early yesterday morning. Salandy was rushed to Port-of-Spain General Hospital around 7am, but later sucumbed to her injuries at about 8:30am. According to reports, the other occupant of the vehicle, national female footballer Tamar Watson suffered two broken legs and is currently listed in critical condition.

One of the world's most successful female boxers, Giselle Salandy established a new world record of eight championship belts including the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA), World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) titles. Salandy was an astounding 17-0 after her most recent fight on Boxing Day against Dominican Republic’s Yahaira Hernandez.

Can you believe it, 2008 has reached its end. It's that time of the year again... out with the old and in with the new, shed bad habits (well, try to) and make those New Year's resolutions. Yes, good ole New Year's resolutions, which the majority of us seem to break within the first week of the New Year! We are only human right??!! And of course, there's always next year to try and get things right.
Soooo One Caribbean Family decided to have a New Years Eve party and spice it up a bit by also including a "Eyes Wide Shut" theme where you had to wear a mask and all black, sounds cool right? The original location at Tropical Heat restaurant fell through so the party had to be moved to J.S. Oasis. Is Caribbean people so we make things happen at the last minute. Anyway I got there around 1AM (I wanted to ring in the new year with the fam) and there was a nice crowd there really enjoying the first few hours of the new year (some enjoying it more than others). As usual DJ Thunderstorm provided us with a sweet mix of soca and reggae and of course special thanks always to DJ Crazy C for passing through, much respect to you always!
It was nice to see that people actually came out in their masks following the theme, and there were some pretty ones too. Despite the little hiccup in the location swap, the party was nice and I had a good time.I would like to leave you with a quote to think about for 2009... "Every man dies, not every man really lives." -- William Wallace. Ponder on that for a minute. Life is too short not to enjoy it, right??!! Happy New Year folks!

Forte was released on Wednesday ahead of the Christmas season following a pardon last month by President Bush.

He was originally set to serve 14 years in jail after being caught in 2001 with two briefcases containing $1.4 million dollars worth of cocaine at Newark International Airport.

Forte served seven years behind bars. His freedom is due largely in part to the work of folk singer and friend Carly Simon, who lobbied to have his conviction overturned.

Upon meeting Khari for the first time it was easy to see that he lives music, as he exudes a regal, spiritual vibe that is undeniably felt by all around him.

With a strong voice he says, “Weh’s de scene” our source then proceeded to ask him about the latest controversy in his new Soca song titled “Call Me,” recorded by Artical One Productions on the Te Pica Riddim. With a smile Kill looked over and said “What controversy?”, then reached for a DVD with live footage of himself and Bunji Garlin on stage at the Elite Ark in Brooklyn and there it was, “The Confession.”

Khari why did you choose to sing a song on this topic?

Khari replied, “People does see me and ask me why yuh doh put out ah Soca tune for carnival?...not knowing I have been putting out sweet Soca music over the years and have not been able to be recognized, even though I am an established musician that’s known to the world for my Reggae music, with hits such as “Picture of Selassie.” So I say, yuh know wha, I go put out a song dat go cause bacchanal because carnival is bacchanal and bacchanal is carnival, as meh brethren Jah Bami say before dey thief he style” then he laughed.

Guyanese singer Nhojj joins Rihanna, Regina Belle at Barbados Music Awards 2009

NEW YORK, USA: Guyanese soul singer Nhojj heads to the 4th Annual Barbados Music Awards on January 4, 2009 to perform his sensual ballad “Love.” The ceremony will be held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre in Barbados, and will be viewed globally via live web broadcast.

BMA producer Ronnie Morris invited Nhojj after hearing him sing “Love” at Guyana Fashion Weekend ‘08. Attendees included the American Ambassador, GFW president Sonia Noel, BET host Abiola Abrams, and “Amen” sitcom actress Anna Maria Horsford. Walter Greene, host of the event and editor of the weekly New York Carib News, wrote “Nhojj is on the cusp of becoming a household name.”

At age 5 Nhojj began his musical journey singing choir hymns in his father’s small church in Guyana. Now he writes and records his own songs. Lyrics to “Love” are provocative–”I want to see you nude in the moonlight”–quite a jump from “The Lord’s Prayer,” one of his childhood favorites.

“It’s not so much of a jump,” Nhojj explains. “The nude body is a creation of God, a thing of beauty. I want my music to tap into that beauty. I want it to be positive and affirming–to be joyful.”

In recording “Love” for his new release “Soul Comfort,” Nhojj utilized the work of pianist Carl Evans (Stevie Wonder, Barry White) and percussionist Tommy Aros (Luis Miguel). “Love” is featured in the Indie film “Blueprint” which screened at over 30 International Film Festivals this year, including the Cannes Film Festival. Just over six months after winning the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall 2008 competition, Singer Jah and Baby Tash are showing that they are poised for growth.

Register and Mix up are what the first Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall, Singer Jah and Baby Tash have unleashed through Real Jam Records as their first successful singles. The songs which have been receiving air-plays on various radio stations got their official premier at the launch of the 2008/2009 season of Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall. Along with the official videos for both songs the tracks are expected to take over the colours of TV in the coming weeks as various TV and Cable station premieres the videos.

Just over six months after winning the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall 2008 competition, Singer Jah and Baby Tash are showing that they are poised for growth. Both worked with top producers in the music industry to create high quality videos for their respective singles. Both videos premiered on the Entertainment Report recently and also had their debut on TVJ's Intense. Singer Jah had the opportunity to work with Mellissa Llewellyn as producer and J Will as director for his video Register. Trinidad - December: By October the melody of his song was stuck in our heads and the lyrics bounced off the tongues of many unprepared music lovers. Even before the hype begun for the Carnival 2k8 season, he was already receiving remarkable airplay and was somewhat responsible for setting the groovy Soca tone for 2k8.

We were already “Chippin down the road” and encouraging many others to do the same. Farmer formerly Farmer Nappy has been enjoying immense success since his debut as a Solo artiste in May 2007. His smooth and successful transition is one that led to him copping the title of “Best Groovy Soca Song Of The Year” at COTT Awards 2008 for his smash hit “Chippin.”

Born Darryl Henry, Farmer has experienced many changes in the Soca industry and has utilized every experience to become the artiste he is today. Following his bumper season from Crop Over into Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival 2k8, he is at it again, this time it is all about Belly Dancer!! The recently released groovy soca track is already receiving satisfactory airplay in Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, UK, New York and many Caribbean islands.

Farmer’s inspiration for his new single, Belly Dancer came to him after hearing the riddim in the studio. He said as soon as he heard the riddim he told the producer to “burn it for him one time.” When asked about the penning of the lyrics for this song, Nappy responded, “The words came to me instantly; De ting start around two in de morning, came to me first and the words flowed from there.” He continued by saying, “My manager heard the riddim and said it sounded a bit Arabian, with that came, belly belly belly belly dancer.”

Caribbean Artistes Make 51st Annual GRAMMY Nominations

Bajan-born Grammy singer, Rihanna, received three nominations Wednesday night. Rihanna was nominated in the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals category for her collaboration with Maroon 5 on `If I Never See Your Face Again,` in the Best Long Form Music Video category for `Good Girl Gone Bad Live` and in the Best Dance Recording for `Disturbia.`

Other Caribbean artists making the nomination list for the 51st Grammy`s are Burning Spears, Elephant Man, Heavy D, Shaggy, Lee `Scratch` Perry and Sly & Robbie. The six are vying for the Best Reggae Album honor.

Burning Spear`s `Jah Is Real,` will face off against the Elephant God`s 'Let`s Get Physical', as well as `Vibes` by Heavy D; ` Repentance,` by Lee `Scratch` Perry, Shaggy`s `Intoxication` and `Amazing` by Sly & Robbie.

The 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on `GRAMMY Sunday,` Feb. 8, 2009, at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

On the inside, DJ Thunder was on the set jammin' the sounds of sweet Soca, special thanks to Soca Freaks for passing through, the crowd was lovin' de vibes. A mixture of old school and new school reggae and soca reamed from the speakers whole night. We experienced some technical difficulties at one point but is no scene, when the music came back the vibes was nice. Yo, we even hear some wicked tunes from back in the day... reminded us of the days back home. Trini, JA, BIM, Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia or wherever you from, it was memory lane.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP)—A pair of goals by Kenwyne Jones and Dwight Yorke in a two-minute span in the second half helped Trinidad and Tobago to a 3-0 win over Cuba on Wednesday night and a place in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

Keon Daniel added a late goal for Trinidad, which needed only one point to advance.

“It was significant that we had this result tonight because even though people felt this was going to be an easy game, we didn’t play particularly great in the first half,” Yorke said.

There was some tough talking at halftime, he added.

“We got in at 0-0 but things could have gone the other way and we recognized that. Some harsh words were said and full credit to the players, because they stepped up to the plate.”

On a heavy surface soaked by two days of torrential rain, Trinidad almost took a second-minute lead when Cuban defender Jenier Molina slipped and gave up possession. Russell Latapy’s shot was wide and the game remained scoreless.

Cuba had a chance in the 24th minute when Mario Leonard’s drive beat goalkeeper Clayton Ince only to hit the inside of the post. Roberto Balmaseda failed to convert the rebound.

Jones missed a number of opportunities before Yorke’s pass put him through one on one with Cuban keeper Danis Quintero Chevans in the 67th minute. The Sunderland striker slotted the ball beneath Chevans to send the home fans in Hasely Crawford Stadium into a roar.

“I believe Kenwyne Jones has the capacity to be one of the best forwards in the world,” said Trinidad’s Colombian-born coach Francisco Maturana. “He is a rock, and it’s been a few years he’s been like that.”

Two minutes later, Jones returned the favor when he hit Yorke inside the penalty area. Yorke drifted past a Cuban defender before driving a low right-foot shot beyond Chevans.

Daniel completed the scoring in the 89th minute. Carlos Edwards worked down the right flank, ran to the byline and cut the ball to the top of the box, where Daniel calmly side-footed a shot into the top of the net.

Kingston, Jamaica: - January 22 – 24, 2009 will see Rose Hall, Montego Bay come alive with the JAMAIACA Jazz and Blues Festival which is gearing up to be even more electrifying than in previous years.

The Festival, which has hosted acts such as George Benson, Erika Badu, Kenny G, Dionne Warwick, Michael Bolton, Kenny Rogers, Shaggy, Third World and a host of other top-class local and international performers, is expected to live up to its reputation of being the premier event on the Caribbean's entertainment calendar. London's effervescent and multi-talented new artiste, Estelle; Grammy Award-winning star Lionel Richie; and hit-makers Atlantic Starr are just some of the acts which will grace the stage at the 2009 Festival.

The new branding of the event as the JAMAICA Jazz and Blues Festival was endorsed by the Jamaica Tourist Board, which now assumes the Title sponsorship of the festival. The change has given the Jamaica brand prime placement, a move which is expected to aid in positioning Jamaica as a premier event destination. Air Jamaica, original owner and promoter of the festival, remains committed to its partnership with the event, and will be the presenting sponsor for 2009.

"I shall take immediate measures for Antigua and Barbuda's highest mountain peak to be dedicated in your honor and renamed 'Mount Obama,'" Prime Minister W Baldwin Spencer wrote in a congratulatory note to the victorious US presidential candidate on Wednesday.

The 1,327-foot (402-metre) volcanic peak rises over southwestern Antigua in the former British colony whose 85,000 residents are mostly descended from African slaves brought in to harvest the sugar cane fields in the 1700s.

In 2000, Edwin Ayoung dared to make such a bold prediction in the classic In Time To Come. In 2008, he lived to see it fait accompli.

As he monitored Tuesday night’s election coverage he was ecstatic that Barack Obama was elected America’s first African American president.

Obama clinched arguably the most prestigious job in the world from Republican John Mc Cain, 73. He was also the first Democrat to receive more than 50 per cent of the popular vote since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

In his typical, ebullient style, Ayoung said: “Wow! Big licks!

“I backing Obama. I want him to win by a landslide. The man will be great.”

Breaking a bottle of red wine, Ayoung gushed, “I am just so happy for Obama. When I sang that song people said I was mad. People in the calypso fraternity said, ‘He really mad. Now, we know he crazy for sure.’ Everybody say ‘I was singing stupidness.’”

Ayoung, who pioneered soca parang, said he had received the same response from his fraternity when he sang the first soca parang—“Parang Soca” in 1976.

“They say I singing stupidness. They pelt the tapes at me.”

Still, he persevered; receiving nightly encores at the Revue Tent, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain, for In Time To Come.

The gem even took him to the Dimanche Gras finals in which he had placed sixth; while Shadow ruled the roost—with the rib-tickling What’s Wrong With Me.

Last laugh for Ayoung

Again for 2008, Ayoung, 64, had the last laugh on his critics, detractors and “doubting Thomases.”

He said: “I am happy I live to see history in the making. I may not live to see my other predictions. But I live to see this one. This is the big one, baby, as Sanford (Redd Foxx) would say.”

Ayoung said: “I remember Duke...my good friend... ‘boy, that will never happen now.’ People must be saying Crazy is ah obeah man. I is a Jesus man. I eh have no crystal ball. I just had foresight. You, see, I eh so crazy after all.”

Ayoung, who had just returned from a performance in Antigua, said he felt, if they had been given the chance the entire Caribbean would have voted for Obama.

Ayoung said Obama’s victory has enabled America to regain the respect of the international community, particularly for its bungled war against Iraq.

“This is great for America. This is fantastic for black people all over the world.”

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: History was created on Tuesday night when 47-year-old Senator Barak Obama defeated 72-year-old Senator John Mc Cain to become the 44th President of the United States of America and the first African-American to move into the White House.

The Caribbean Diaspora, especially in New York, California, and Florida, turned out in full force to support the Illinois Democrat following calls by regional leaders in Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and St Kitts and Nevis, amongst others, to support Obama, who in his victory speech pledged to unite America. He repeated the speech he made at the Democratic Convention more than four years ago when he said there is no blue state or red state but a United States

In his concession speech, Mc Cain said it was an historic election and America today is different, since the country has come a long way to see a African-American as president. He pledged to work with Obama and called on all his supporters to rally behind the President-elect and to bridge the differences and work towards improving their country.

McCain expressed regret that Obama's grandmother, the woman who moulded his life, did not live to see him elected as president.

Obama, in his victory speech, said that McCain has made a lot of sacrifices for his country and said that he is looking forward to working with him in rebuilding the nation. He said that there are many challenges ahead. He referred to the two wars and the financial crisis being experienced in the country.

He spoke out against partisan attitudes and said that he will be the president for all America, even those who did not support him.

Political commentators and analysts said that a large number of Latinos supported Obama, which assisted him to win Florida, one of the key states along with Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Thousands in Caribbean stayed up until the early hours of Wednesday morning, following the election results and listening to the concession and victory speeches. The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) made special arrangements with the US Embassy in Barbados to report on the election.

In `Witness to Jonestown,` viewers will be introduced to many members and relatives affected by the massacre and see archival and present-day interviews with surviving and former Peoples Temple members, who will attempt to answer the questions of how and why 900 Americans would follow one man to their deaths.

Among them are: Stephan Jones, the son of the Peoples Temple leader, Reverend Jim Jones; Grace Stoen, whose attempts to reclaim her son from the Temple outraged Jones; Terri Buford, in her first in-depth television interview since she defected from the Temple's inner circle; and Tim Carter, who witnessed the deaths of his wife and child in Jonestown before he escaped through the South American jungle.

NBC News lost two of its own journalists at Jonestown. Their survivors and those of Congressman Leo Ryan will also be included. While NBC's own Fred Francis and The Washington Post's Charles Krause, who was wounded at the airstrip, provide chilling remembrances and insight as the first television and print journalists to arrive on scene and witness the horrific aftermath.

Beres Hammond Readies 25th Album!

NEW YORK, USA (Reuters): With a voice as soulful as Otis Redding's, as romantic as Luther Vandross and as purely Jamaican as reggae itself, Beres Hammond has been a consistent hitmaker since the '70s. Those qualities are still on display on his 25th album, "A Moment in Time."

Due November 11 on VP Records, the set reconfirms a widely held appraisal of the 53-year-old as Jamaica's greatest living singer-songwriter.

"You would be hard-pressed to find a singer alive that has the catalog that Beres Hammond has," says Ainsworth "Big A" Higgins, an on-air personality at Jamaican radio station IRIE-FM. "Someone would have to look at the works of (the late) Dennis Brown and Bob Marley to find his equal in terms of hit songs, and he continues making hits for a generation young enough to be his grandchildren."

Hammond's most successful effort for VP Records, the 2001 Grammy Award-nominated "Music Is Life," has sold 46,000 U.S. copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. His all-time best seller is the 1994 Elektra album "In Control" (67,000 units).

"Beres is not a follower of trends. He is not going to make Sean Paul records -- he is going to make Beres records, traditional Jamaican records, and those records have a sales ceiling in America," says Dante Ross, who signed Hammond to Elektra in 1993 and is now vice president of SRC Records. "He doesn't need the industry to survive. He tours like a mad man, his voice is timeless, and he will be making great records for another 20 years."

Hammond's lack of crossover success is of greater concern to the reggae industry, which struggles for a consistent presence in the mainstream despite the music's far-reaching influence, than it is to Hammond. His recent tour attracted capacity crowds in Toronto and Montreal and upward of 20,000 fans at a free concert in Brooklyn's Wingate Park.

"Things couldn't be any better for me than they are now. When I first started out, I just wanted to be on the road, performing. I never imagined it to be like this," the bespectacled singer says, gesturing to the luxurious interior of his tour bus after his Brooklyn performance. "At one time there wasn't any bus, and now we have two on the road, and I have had it like this for many years. There are many artists who have been on the Billboard charts and still can't have this kind of fan base."

Hammond has amassed his global fan base with a succession of No. 1 singles in Jamaica and on reggae charts internationally. His songs seamlessly shift between political and spiritual themes and occasionally pay homage to the artists who have most inspired him.

But Hammond is renowned as reggae's most sublime romantic crooner. Whether he's singing about pledging a lifetime of devotion ("Full Attention") or stealing love on the side ("Double Trouble"), his impassioned vocals bring a deeper texture to the love-song prototype, as do his lyrics, which adapt everyday circumstances as handily as references to the Songs of Solomon.

For "A Moment in Time," which he produced at his Harmony House studio in Kingston, Hammond worked with an ensemble of Jamaica's finest musicians. "Still Will Be Heaven" juxtaposes orchestral strings with a one-drop rhythm as Hammond muses on a long-term relationship that hasn't gone stale over time but has grown more profound, much like his music.

"I just get a song in my head and record it in the matter it came to me," he offers as the reason for his enduring allure. "I don't change nothing, and it always seems not to be wrong."

Byron Lee Presented with Order Of Jamaica

Addressing the ceremony, Bruce Golding Prime Minister of Jamaica, said the O.J. was most richly deserved by Lee, leader of the world-famous band, Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires.

`Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires was an institution that made such an impact on the lives of so many people that Byron’s contribution must be boldly recorded when the history of Jamaican music is being written,` Golding said.

In playing his part to popularize Jamaican music, the prime minister said Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires had taken the music to `our living rooms and then to the rest of the world.` He said that even where people did not understand what was being played they were still drawn to the music.

Noting that the band only last year celebrated its 50th anniversary, Golding said Byron Lee and the Dragaonnaires had entertained, inspired and mesmerized three generations of Jamaicans. He said that in the process, the band had brought Carnival to Jamaica, ` expanding and enriching our music and our culture.`

The prime minister said Jamaica was proud `to pay tribute to Mr. Lee for all that he has done for our music and for his powerful fight against cancer.`

Lee, 73, was diagnosed with stage three cancer in November 2006.

KMC has always has a passion for music. As a young child he used to sneak about and listen to the bands in his village. "At the age of seven, I used to go under the house by the band and when they weren't around I would play the drum set." As time marched on, the same energy and precociousness that brought the young KMC to the drum set also brought him to teach himself how to play music. "Music is something I was never taught. I was never taught to play the keyboard. I learned to do everything on my own. Love is what made me master it. Everything I do is by ear and not by reading," he proclaims.

KMC started his musical career as a dancehall artist, recording and releasing a total if sixteen records. In 1998, he decided to test his skills in the Soca genre, bursting onto the scene with songs like "Kaya", "Bashment to Carnival" and "Soca Bashment". These were well received by his fans and helped to establish KMC as a leading Soca artist.

With over ten independently released Soca albums and compilations to his name, KMC is responsible for the Voodoo, Drunk Man, Concubine, Party Alliance, Thunderbirds, X-Out, Stinging Nettle, and Tear Drop Riddims, amongst others. He has also produced songs for some of the leading Soca artists, including Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin, Maximus Dan, Destra Garcia, Denise Belfon, and Jungle. KMC is known for songs like "Doh Want to Know", "Carnival Rags", "Rough Wine", "First Experience", "Flopping Up", "Cyah X Me Out" and "Animal".

In April 2005, KMC was signed to the American music label Sequence Records. His debut album on the label was entitled Soul on Fire after the album's first single. The album entered the Billboard Top 200 at number 84 and has sold approximately 285,000 copies worldwide.

"Soul On Fire", the single, was the first track released from the album in June 2005. The song’s remix, featured Jamaican dancehall star Beenie Man and American disc jockey Fat Man Scoop. The video for the Soul on Fire single was filmed in Tobago and featured the Trinidadian model Teri Bovell.

Miami, FL-September 30, 2008- Selman Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of the Miami Carnival Inc., died on Monday, September 29, 2008 at Aventura Hospital, Aventura, FL. The following is a statement from his family and the Board of Directors of Miami Carnival, Inc.

Selman Vincent Lewis-August 4, 1948- September 29, 2008

Selman’s life began 60 years ago in Trinidad. He attended Belmont Intermediate School. As a youngster he played mas in Kiddies Carnival. He continued to play mas every year in Trinidad and Tobago. Selman was a loyal member of Peter Minshall’s band for many years and in recent years with Brian McFarlane “mas band”.

Selman migrated to New York in 1969. He attended Pace University and aviation school in New York. Selman was awarded a government scholarship from the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago and after graduating with a Bachelor's Degree; he returned to Trinidad & Tobago to work for the Government in various Ministries, including a posting as a Foreign Service Diplomat with a portfolio, which included tourism and international trade.

In 1980, Selman started working for the Trinidad and Tobago Tourist Board in Miami. He formed Mega Marketing Inc. in 1988. As a tourism and marketing professional, Selman also played a role in building Miami as a destination brand within the Caribbean Diaspora. Selman has had Board responsibilities with numerous front-line organizations nationally and internationally and has received many awards for his management, marketing and leadership abilities.

“Selman Lewis offered his marketing acumen in making Miami a premier destination brand. His contribution to our region's cultural tourism is unquestioned," said Bill Talbert, President, Greater Miami Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Selman’s love and passion for Carnival continued when he became the guiding force behind Miami Carnival in 1990. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Miami Carnival Inc. and as such was responsible for the execution of the annual Miami Carnival, which is the third-largest Caribbean Carnival in North America. He is also the President of China Mas Group, the most outstanding mas band in Miami Carnival, which has won the "Band of the Year" title for seven consecutive years. In addition to Miami Carnival, Selman started the era of the Coconut Grove Convention Center Carnival party, hiring 5 music bands for two nights in Miami. An innovator, possessing an immensely creative mind, Selman truly laid the foundation for the success and growth of the Miami Carnival celebration.

“Always and to the end, Selman was the icon of knowledge behind Miami Carnival. He worked on the 24th Annual Miami Carnival until the day he went into the hospital. He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves us with extraordinary inspiration to draw upon this Miami Carnival season”, states the Miami Carnival Inc., board members.

"We are saddened at the loss of Selman Lewis. He was a community pillar who provided leadership to the important cultural institution of Caribbean Carnival in South Florida”. Miami-Dade County, Commissioner Dennis Moss, District 9

"Within in the last few months, a number of personalities from the Trinidad and Tobago community in South Florida have died. The Trinidad and Tobago Consulate General extends its deepest condolences to Selman's family on this very sad occasion” states Mr. Gerald Greene, Consul General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Selman is survived by his wife Janet, two sons Christopher and Adrian, daughter-in-law Jerry, grandchildren Kai and Terrick and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. These party animals rocked this boat, at Soca Freaks Movement Black Foot boatride. Yuh girl Darkie arrived about 8:15 (late as ususal, oh gorsh ah is a Trini) and the party was already swinging, good thing my partner in crime "Paparazzi" was there early to capture some "before" pictures for me. The crowd had a good mixture of young and old that was ready to party. The boat left at about 8:45 and by this time everyone was on the top deck getting their grub on (yes there was free food too).
The vibe was real nice for everyone. We set sail with some sweet soca by DJ Crazy C, and some people even started dancing with plate in hand and all, damn that was a good way to start de fete. Soon after DJ Thunderstorm took over and blessed us with some sweet soca and reggae. For the rest of the night Crazy C and Thunderstorm took turns entertaining the crowd, yes they was sounding nice, Crazy C even had people running on de boat, comess!! De Darkie and the rest of the limers departed the boat around midnight. A good time was had by all (some had too much of a good time, see photo here and here ). De Darkie will see allyuh at de next fete, latah.

Topping off a nice carnival weekend was the Glow party. I was glad to see a big turn out considering it was the same night as the festival and I thought that most people would have been tired. The festival this year was a great success. People looked like they were having a good time, enjoying the food, music, crafts and everything else. Congratulations to Lee 2 Productions on their King of the band title for their presentation "Jewels of the Caribbean, ThunderbirdsCLT on their queen of the band and best kiddies band title for their portrayal of "Out of Africa" and most importantly, Band of the year Image Mas Camp "Beauty of the Rainforest", it was very well deserved. Let's come out bigger and better next year Charlotte, and tell ah frien'.

Adrian Miller also known as DJ Thunder is a native of the Caribbean island of Barbados. "I fell in love with music from birth and my passion for music will still go on until the day the torch is passed. At the tender age of thirteen years old, I began playing music at street fairs in various schools in Barbados. This was my first time playing music outside of the house".

In 1994 he decided to start his own sound and Thunderstorm Movement was established. It represents the power of music and that is how the slogan of "when thunder strides, the storm begins" was developed.

"My legacy when I die, I would like the album on my grave, "Natural Mystic" by the one and only Bob Marley".
